EA's free-to-play team-based shooter leaves beta testing and opens up for everyone.
After quite a reasonably lengthy final round of beta testing, Electronic Arts and DICE have pushed Battlefield Heroes out onto the web. This free-to-play team-based third-person shooter has been covered here at GameSpy extensively over the past 18 months.
As noted at PlanetBattlefield, EA is saying that this is only a "soft launch" of the game, and a fully fledged announcement will be made in the near future. You'll need to sign up for an EA account on the Battlefield Heroes page before access to the game is granted.
The game offers players the chance to get ahead of the curve in terms of leveling up and character customization via microtransactions. Part with money and purchase Battlefunds which can be used to level up faster, get Valor Points faster, buy unique clothes and exclusive in-game items.
Aside from this method of revenue, Battlefield Heroes uses advertising through the game's official site -- which is where the client for the game is launched. At the time of writing the Battlefield site was experiencing some latency, but the client installation took around four minutes to download and install.
